Fire Alarm Monitoring & Inspection

fire alarm monitoring

Fire Alarm Monitoring. VoIP and digital phone service can adversly affect the monitoring of your fire alarm.

A fire alarm system relies on proper operation of its' connected telephone lines to reliably communicate alarm signals to the monitoring center. Proper transmission of these signals is critical when you need it most. Additionally, the commercial fire alarm life safety code requires that the fire alarm system send test signals to the monitoring center on a daily basis to indicate it's online and operating properly.

We would like to inform you about the new types of telephone services and the impact they have on your fire alarm system. Commonly referred to as "VoIP" (Voice over Internet Protocol) and digital telephone service, these technologies allow you to make telephone calls via a broadband internet connection instead of using a traditional land based plain old telephone service "POTS" line. Typically, these new types of phone service replace your traditional landline service.

There are several important things to consider before making the decision to use VoIP or digital telephone service:

  • VoIP requires continuous power. If you lose power, you will not be able to use any phone line connected to VoIP. More importantly, the fire alarm system will not send any signals to the monitoring center.

  • With digital telephone phone service offered by your cable or internet provider, your fire alarm may be unable to consistently and reliably send alarm signals to the monitoring center. This technology may also cause the alarm signals to get scrambled as they are sent.

Cellular transmission of fire alarm signals to the monitoring center will eliminate the need for telephone lines and improve the reliability of your fire alarm system.

We encourage you to check with us before making any changes to your existing telephone service. If you have already switched to "VoIP" or digital telephone service, it is extremely important that you contact us.

Fire Alarm System Inspection

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA 72) code requires that a commercial fire alarm be inspected once a year to ensure proper operation. Falco will test and inspect your fire detection devices and the alarm control panel. This testing ensures fire detection devices are working, the control panel's communication with the monitoring center and audible / visual notification of the building's occupants for their safety. Check the date on the fire alarm control panel inspection tag to be sure it's in compliance. If you need to schedule a fire alarm inspection contact us.
